The Circle of the Silver Baobab is a thriving seed group based in Somerset West of the Cape Winelands.
Although we follow the Druidic teachings as laid out in the three OBOD degrees, we also honour (and incorporate) other Pagan expressions such as Wicca, Asatru, Strega, Khemetic, Shamanic, and others - so long as the paths are aligned to our overall druidic ethos of truth, love, inclusivity, honour, respect, and wisdom.
Our name was carefully crafted to be a blending of our Northern & Celtic (European) ancestral heritage, combined with the deeply-rooted magick and love we have of the Southern African landscape we call "Home". The Silver Baobab is central to our emblem. It invites us into feelings of shelter, wisdom, and luminous rootedness. Silver is a colour reminiscent of spirit, heaven, celestial blessings and Otherworldly radiance. The Baobab is the indigenous Tree of Life, which is an intricate part of local creation stories, and offers us a bridge between world, cultures, languages, customs, time and space. The circle denotes a link to our country's motto: UNITY THROUGH DIVERSITY - a harmonious ring of compassion, kindness and inclusivity.

This Seed Group was planted in the fertile soil of the Cape Winelands out of a need for community for those who follow nature-based, or alternative, spiritual paths. Our founder, Rev. Ryan Edmonds, is a Wiccan elder, ordained Pagan priest, a registered Religious Marriage Officer, and the current Public Relations Officer of the South African Pagan Council (SAPC).
Ryan, himself, was raised in the Pagan faith, and initated and elevated within the Circle of Wicca, wherein he has been a leader, teacher and mentor for over 25 years. He is also a student and member of OBOD, and saw the potential in the OBOD syllabus (and community) to create a space that fosters education, dialogue, ritual, and spiritual growth to any sincere seeker.
Although we have been active in the local Pagan (and spiritual) community for many years, the formalisation of our Seed Group, the Circle of the Silver Baobab, gives us an opportunity to be recognised by the wider community within our society at large. This special event took place at the Spring Equinox of 2025, and allows us to be affiliated to various other national Pagan communities who are in healthy, positive conversation at a governmental level to maintain the protection of our religious rights and freedoms in South Africa as members of a minority religious path. Through our participation in local (and national) conversations, we hope to remove stigams, educate, and offer a torch of guidance for all those trying to walk a solitary spiritual path to feel they can participate in a community that fosters love, safety and inslusivity.
One of the most enriching ways to study Druidry is through the well-established, and world-class training course offered by OBOD. Although we at the Circle of the Silver Baobab offer tuition, classes and workshops of our own, we also offer support to all OBOD students, and a space of community - both in-person and online (from 2026, wherein we will have fortnightly online Seed Group meetings).
